Licensed electricians are an important profession in today’s modern world. There are three different types of electricians including those that work for themselves (self-employment), those that are hired by electrical contractors and those that teach. As a skilled trades person, an electrician knows the ins and outs of electrical wire and how to properly handle life power.

Domestic Electrician

Nearly every homeowner is familiar with the domestic electrician whose responsibilities include installing, maintaining and repairing electrical wiring and its components. Domestic electricians work on residential properties from the electrical panel box to the receptacles, light switches and power boxes that operate the range, stove, HVAC unit and dryer.

Commercial Electrician

A commercial electrician has extensive skills in maintaining and repairing all electrical components and wiring in office buildings, commercial properties, restaurants, hospitals, schools, shopping malls and retail stores. Commercial electrical lines and power sources tend to be more involved than a residential home and apartment complex.

Construction Electrician

A construction electrician has thorough knowledge, training and experience at designing and installing electrical systems in new commercial and residential buildings. This job performance requires working together with architects, engineers, general contractors and carpenters at every phase of the construction process.

Linemen

Often referred to as an outdoor electrician, linemen specialize in the electrical power grid including underground cables and overhead power lines. In addition, linemen also work on traffic and street lights, and major electrical cables bringing power to commercial properties and residential homes.

Instructors

In addition, many electricians specialize in teaching, and instruct students in vocational colleges. They instruct others how to read electrical schematics, work on basic wiring, and handle every aspect of electricity from generating power to installing and maintaining electrical systems in homes and commercial buildings.

An electrician is an essential part of modern day living, because so many components and appliances operate on electrical power.
